I
am completely an adventure spots lover and never miss any opportunity that
comes my way. I came to known through sport magazines that a thrilling
adventure spot- heli-skiing probably the most exciting sport is introduced
in the sub-continent. India the first Asian country to offer opportunities
for heli-skiing made its debut in Kashmir in January 1988.
Myself a great lover of this most challenging sport knew well that this
adventure requires prior skiing experience as well as a complete information
of the physical features like the valley wind direction and hazard areas.
I knew that Himalayas provides complete skiing destinations and being a
tremendous sports lover, I accepted a challenge of climbing the glacial
regions with my heli skiing venture among the Indian Himalayas.
I came to know that the main Skiing area in Himachal Pradesh is Manali,
Kufri and Narkanda. I contacted the manager in Himachal Helicopter Skiing at
Mall Shimla and inquire about all my doubts as I know this sport challenges
the risk-taking explorer in you, as you have to ski down through unknown
routes and ridges. The authorities told me that Indian Himalayan region is
just the best way to start off this thrilling sport. Some of the best
opportunities included Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, Rohtang Pass and
Chandrakhani Pass near Manali.
The skiing season generally starts from the month of January and continues
till Mid-March depending upon snow conditions. Himachal Pradesh Tourism
Development Corporation organizes ski courses of 7 days and 15 days'
duration at Narkhanda, 65 km every year. The facilities for the participants
include boarding, lodging and equipment.
It was a sensational experience while trying the Heli Skiing in Himachal
Pradesh. A ride of ten minutes took us to the top of a 14,000-foot high
slope known as ridges by the helicopter and was dropped there. From there we
criss crossed our way down the snow-capped mountains. It was just wonderful
experience beyond explanation, an experience that left me wonder stuck. A
well-trained ski instructor was arranged for us who had a thorough knowledge
about the skiing area. We were told in the beginning that the guides'
decisions are supreme and we have to respect them.
I took a heli-skiing package include 100,000 ft. of vertical skiing six-day
guide service and use of an avalanche receiver, seven-light lodging in
Manali plus all meals, escorted air and ground transfer Delhi-Manali-Delhi,
airport transfers.
