From
beginning adventure is in my blood. I love to take any kind of challenge in
adventure sports that come my way and I just cannot stay away from it. My
friends told me that there are facilities for many adventurous sports in
Himachal Pradesh, after that there was no looking back as nothing could stop
me to quench my lust for these adventurous sports. After a long break some
excitement was ahead. I thoroughly started a research on the net to find out
the various adventurous options in Himachal Pradesh. To my surprise the list
of games that Himachal notarize was endless- the state enjoys the privilege
of winter sports like trekking, skiing, river rafting, mountain cycling,
mountaineering, paragliding. To get a more detailed information about the
adventure sports, I took a brochure from the Himachal Pradesh tourist
office. It was really beneficial as it contained all the answers to my
queries.
The authorities also informed me that the trekking season in Himachal
Pradesh runs from mid-May to mid-October. I opted for Backpacking Trekking
that involves the carrying a light pack, dried food and tent along with some
other personal items, in fact such a light pack makes the journey truly easy
and less tiring. Our trekking route was from Shimla to Kulu via Bashleo Pass
covering almost the distance of 56 kms. I had a lot of fun trekking in
Himachal, a magnificent unification of flora and fauna with virgin snow
mountains. The majestic altitude and spread of the snow-clad mountains, with
the added advantage of powdered snow are bewitching enough to enchant your
adventurous spirits.
As a winter sports lover I had tried many of the adventurous sports in US
my native country and my favorite paragliding was among one of them. Every
year government of Himachal Pradesh organizes an international event of Para
Gliding in Kangra Valley. It is the most famous spot in the country. I was
also among the lucky ones to participate in this most exciting sport. The
Dhauladhar range, 20,000 ft above sea level and the Kangra valley below
create an ideal location for high altitude and cross-country gliding. It was
an out of the world experience when we took off from the top, the fall was
about 1 km, lasting for an exciting 25to30 minutes. Truly speaking I didn't
had any problem while trying paragliding in Himachal, the authorities were
extremely courteous and co-operative.
My next choice was trying out some water sports, as I was on a leisure trip
I wanted to take out best from my adventure holidays. Believe me, it was
very difficult to try out these sports for the first time but I was fully
determined to go for water sports too. I inquired from the tourist office
and came to know that the Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports
with the collaboration of Maharana Pratap Sagar reservoir in Kangra with its
42 km length and 2 km breadth, offers a variety of activities, like
swimming, water-skiing, surfing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing and sailing.
I tried river rafting on the Sutlej River near Shimla, the sport is also
known as White Water Rafting. Initially I was very nervous but with the help
of my coach slowly I got the grip over the game and could enjoy it upto a
full extent. I could really say that it is a never-ending thrill in the
untamed rivers of Indian Himalayas, with many staircase rapids that
challenge the body and spirit of the river runner. The rivers in the upper
Himalayas are among the best in the world for river sports.
